The Seton Girls Soccer Team kept post season hopes alive with a very important home victory Thursday night at Seton.
After a 40 minute weather delay the Cougs took on the Castle Rock Rockets in what was a battle between two teams trying to stay within reach of that third place in the Tri Co League.
The last time these two teams met it was a physical game filled with fouls, injuries, and even a yellow card. This game wasn’t much different as right away these two teams went at each other. Both teams seemed to have their chances and several times Senior forward Kiya Gere placed the ball across the face of the goal but the Cougs couldn’t find the back of the net.
In the 36th minute of the first half a Castle Rock forward broke free and was on her way to goal when she was fouled in the penalty box. Castle Rock was awarded a penalty kick and it looked as though they’d take the 1-0 lead to close out the half. 1st team all league goalie Josie Partridge anticipated the kick perfectly and kept the score tied 0-0. Shortly after that the Cougs’s pressure paid off as Seton was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty box.
Senior Kiya Gere sent a perfect shot over the Castle Rock Goalie to the back left corner of the goal and sent Seton into half time with a 1-0 lead.
The second half was almost a repeat of the 1st with very physical play and both teams putting pressure on each other’s goalie to make plays.
In the 68th minute of the game once again Gere found herself on a run up the left side of the field. This time her cross found it’s mark as Riley McDonough fielded a good touch and put the ball into the back of the net as the keeper scrambled to get in position for a save. The gaol gave the Girls a 2-0 lead and the Rockets never really threatened again.
Coach Chase was very proud of her girls saying: “It’s nice to get the win. I’m proud of how are girls are fighting. Every single one of them is hurting, injured, and they’re fighting through. I’m glad their hard work paid off for them tonight. We have three games left in league and we will finish strong.”
The Cougs have a 7 day break before their next game Thursday Oct. 19th vs La Center at Seton giving them the chance to heal the nagging injuries and make a strong push for that final district spot.
