Kiya Gere played injured almost the entire year. Despite fighting multiple nagging injuries, she didn’t allow them to stop her competitive nature from coming through and receiving the attention and recognition of the opposing coaches throughout the Tri Co League.
Kiya was a unanimous pick for the “player of the year” in girls soccer for the Tri Co League. One coach described her as clearly the best athlete on the field in the entire league.
Kiya, naturally a “sweeper”, or center defender found herself playing multiple positions this year as injuries depleted our roster and many of coach’s options to plug players into different spots. Kiya’s refusal to back down from competition made it an easy transition from defense, to midfield, to forward. Kiya led the team in scoring while spending most of her season playing defense.
Coach Chase described Kiya as a tremendous asset to the entire soccer program. Coach Chase said: ” Kiya was hurt early in the year, yet she showed up every day, taped her own ankles, gave 100% effort every game and every practice, and was a leader on and off the field. She truly demonstrated those qualities we want from our student athlete.”
Josie Partridge once again was recognized by the league for her outstanding play in the goal as she received her second consecutive “goalie of the year” award from the Tri Co League. Josie was an unheard of 4 of 4 this year when facing penalty kicks!
Riley McDonough, the team’s second leading scorer was also noticed by the league with her selection as a 1st team all league forward.
Rachel Balsiger received recognition as well with her selection to the 1st team all league as a defender.
MiKayla Wall received 2nd team honors as a defender and Katherine Zdunich, despite being injured most of the year with a severe concussion, received honorable mention honors.
Congrats girls on a great season! We loved watching you compete!
