In what was one of the most physically intense high school basketball games ever played by a Seton team the Cougars pulled out a 77-74 victory in overtime against the West Sidney Giants.
Playing in our 5th game in 8 days the Cougars took the floor as we always do. Outsized by our opponent. But as with each of our previous games we’ve gotten better, and have made adjustments to use our opponents size to our advantage. Tonight’s game had multiple lead changes as the Giants from Sydney Australia used their 6’7 post and their phyiscality while we countered with speed and tenacious pressure defense.
The Cougs trailed by 2 at the end of the 1st but rallied in the second as once again Matt Kent poured in 10 points in the 2nd quarter to take us into halftime with a 4 point lead. The third belonged to the visiting Giants as they owned the third quarter by outscoring the cougs 25-14. But a 22-15 4th quarter including 9 points by Isaiah Parker, gave us a tie game and a chance to win at the buzzer but Isaiah’s jumper off an isolation play found the back of the rim and bounced out and it was on to overtime. During the 5 minute overtime the Cougar defense buckled down while our offense was patient and executed well out scoring the visitors 8-5 and securing the Cougars second victory of the season.
On a night where we needed every single point the Cougars had 3 starters in double figures with Henry Demsky leading the way with a team high and career high 23 points. Matthew Kent had 18 points and Isaiah Parker added 15. But those points don’t get us the win without the battles that took underneath the boards as 6’1 Hayden Miller, 6’2 Malik Williams and others battled a strong 6ft 7 post who leaned on them all night. Combined with a never quit attitude on the defensive glass and forcing 23 turnovers the Cougs pulled out a win in an incredible high school basketball game!
The boys will get a well deserved rest as their next game comes in 10 days against 4A Heritage High School. This win tonight was the perfect game to play before facing another tough 4A opponent.
