The Cougars were coming off a game cancelled earlier in the week and were anxious to get back on the court. Traveling three hours to face 2A powerhouse Arch Bishop Murphy was no small task but the Cougars showed they came to play.
Unfortunately our offense didn’t join us in the first half as we struggled to put the ball in the hoop. Despite outshooting the Wildcats as much as 3 to 1 we couldn’t find the bottom of the net and the first quarter ended with a 12-12 tie. The Second quarter was even more of an offensive struggle for us as we could only manage 10 points and struggled to run our offensive actions in a manner that would produce easy shots. The results of that dysfunction was several turnovers in a row and a 20-10 2nd quarter in favor of Arch Bishop Murphy.
At halftime all of the Cougar players agreed that we were our own worst enemy and if we just stuck to what we know and what we do we’d be fine. The 3rd quarter started off slow and we found ourselves down by as many as 16 but we found a rhythm and closed the gap to just 8 at then end of the period.
The fourth quarter was worth waiting for as we got back to what we do best. Pressure the ball defensively and push the ball offensively. The result led to a 23 point 4th quarter and a chance to win or tie. Several times in the last couple of minutes it looked like we might be out of it but pressure D led to turnovers and easy baskets. With under a minute to go and down by 3 the Cougs pushed the ball up the floor off of a made free throw, Isaiah Parker hit Henry Demsky coming off a couple of staggered screens and Demsky drained a three pointer to tie the game only to have the ref waive it off with a traveling call. The cougs battled back and with 14 seconds left were trailing by two and the Wildcats at the line. The Wildcats made one of two and Seton pushed the ball up the floor. Matthew Kent ran off several staggered screens to the right wing and caught the pass looking to hit a three but they ran him off the three point line. Kent dropped the ball down to Demsky who threw a skip pass to a wide open Luke Pitzer in the left corner. Pitzer, with perfect form let it fly! Everyone in the gym knew the ball was going in but just as it had happened to us several times in the first quarter the ball was in and rimmed out as the final buzzer sounded. It was the perfect shot for that situation it just didn’t fall. The Cougars dropped a close one with the final score of 63-66.
The Cougars were led by Isaiah Parker who scored 16 of his team high 26 in the second half. Henry Demsky scored 11 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 14. Matthew Kent added 13 points for the Cougars.
The Cougs finish a very ambitious pre-season at 2-6 as they head in to league play on Wednesday vs Kings Way on our home court! Seton will be hosting three games on Jan. 3rd with JV boys beginning at 4:00pm, Varsity Girls 5:30, and Varsity Boys 7pm!
Happy New Year!
