Six years ago on January 17th Seton Catholic Guard DK Lee hit a runner from mid court to give the Seton Catholic Boys Basketball Team it’s first win ever over King’s Way. Since then it’s been all King’s Way as both teams moved up to the 1A division. Tonight that all changed when Isaiah Parker hit a driving lay up with 2.1 seconds to go to give Seton it’s first lead since the start of the first quarter.
The Atmosphere for tonight’s game was what high school basketball is all about! Packed gym, both cheer squads rallying their fans, and two cross town rivalries going head to head! The Cougs started the game on fire going up 9-3 in the first couple of minutes in the quarter. But King’s Way sticks to what they do and it wasn’t long before they narrowed the gap and took the lead. The second quarter did not go well for the Cougars as we struggled to find an offensive rhythm and get any consistent scoring. The Knights led by as many as 18 in the second quarter until we were able to narrow the gap to 12 by halftime.
At halftime all the coaches told the boys was to “be us, play like us” and we’ll be fine. The boys took the court for the second half with a never quit mindset and slowly chipped away at the lead and going into the fourth quarter we were down just nine. The game went back and forth from there and with three minutes to go we had the game within 6. We continued to pressure and with 11 seconds left the cougs found themselves down just one and a time out. We immediately fouled the ball on the inbounds putting them at the line. The Knight’s missed the front end of the one and one and the Cougs won the boards. Isaiah Parker immediately took the ball coast to coast and found an open lane along the right side. With a defender on his hip Isaiah let a soft floater go and if softly bounced on the rim and through the hoop with 2.1 seconds left!
King’s Way took a time out and drew up an out of bounds play. The Cougs defended it perfectly and intercepted the ball but the clock started before the ball was touched in bounds so the game was not over. Seton ball at mid court. On the inbound pass Seton stepped on the out of bounds line and King’s Way was awarded the ball with 2.1 seconds left at mid court. The King’s Way point guard caught the ball at the mid court line, took two dribbles and let it fly. The ball rimmed in and out and the Cougs walked away with their first victory ever on the Knight’s court and first win in 6 years over King’s Way!
The Cougars were led by Henry Demsky’s 19 points! Matthew Kent scored 16 including 4 three pointers! Isaiah Parker hit the game winner and scored 13 points!
The Cougs take on Montesano Saturday Night at Seton! JV 5:30pm, Varsity 7pm!
