Cougars News · Varsity Boys Clinch Playoff Birth With Overtime Victory Over Castle Rock 61-60

The last time these two teams met in early January it was a shot at the buzzer that gave the Cougars the road win! Tonight’s game was nearly a mirror image of that game!

The Cougs jumped out to the early lead and their pressure defense had the Rockets scrambling in the first half. The Cougs forced 13 first half turnovers and led by as many as fourteen. Castle Rock has no quit in them and eventually found their composure and began to close the gap. Seton went in with a 9 point lead at halftime.

The third quarter did not go well for the Cougars as we came out very flat and sluggish. Castle Rock took full advantage and at the end of three it was just a two point game. Castle Rock continued into the fourth quarter with the momentum and held a three point lead with 38 seconds to go when Isaiah Parker was fouled on his way to the hoop he made the shot and was at the line to tie the game! Parker missed the free throw and Castle Rock looked to dribble out the clock. As the clock wound down a Rocket player opened up at the rim and scored with 14 seconds left giving them the three point lead. After a timeout the Cougs ran a play to break Matt Kent free for a three coming off some screens. If that doesn’t work he runs a handoff to Parker for a three. Kent was wide open off the screens but fumbled the ball. He then did a dribble hand off to Parker who rose up and hit nothing but net with 4 seconds left! The Rockets were unable to get a shot off in time and it was on to OT!

In OT the Cougs found some offensive rhythm again. Matt Kent hit a three to put the Cougs up four with just under 30 seconds to play. Isaiah Parker scored a two and hit four straight clutch free throws as Seton was able to pull off the overtime win 61-60 and for the first time in school history guaranteed a post season playoff birth with a win!

The Cougs were led by Isaiah Parker’s 21 points! Matt Kent added 19 points including 14 in the first half. Henry Demsky pitched in 12 points.

The JV Boys also won tonight over Castle Rock 64-45! Kellen Ball led the JV squad with 25 points! Henock Teklesion scored a career hight 12 points!
