Cougars News · Cougs Lose a Heartbreaker in Semi Finals to Top Ranked La Center

Seton Catholic Boys Basketball stepped into uncharted territory tonight as they took the floor in the district semi finals to face the top seeded La Center Wildcats. There weren’t too many people out there in the high school basketball world that gave us much of chance tonight. La Center had been undefeated in league, won their opening tourney game by over 30 had and rolled us on senior night by a large margin as well.

But there were 11 guys wearing Seton Catholic uniforms and four coaches all of who had no doubts in our minds that we could win this game. And not by a fluke. Outright win this game.

The boys had a great practice on Monday and after watching some game film Monday afternoon clearly saw that even against the top team in the league all we had to do was “be us!”

Right from the opening tip Seton showed we weren’t afraid and we weren’t about to back down as Seton came out playing our type of basketball. Fast paced, ball movement, player movement and committed to defense. The Cougs ended the first quarter with an 18-10 lead. The Cougars fans were loud, the cheer leaders were at their best and the atmosphere was amazing!

La Center is a championship calibre team and we knew going in that no matter what kind of run we made La Center was going to be La Center. They’d play tough D and execute on offense. And thats exactly what they did. La Center had a 17 point second quarter to our 11 points and we went into the half up two 29-27.

The third quarter has been a struggle this year for the Cougars but this time we came out just like we started with a purpose and a commitment to just be us. We built as much as a 12 point lead but there is no quit in the heart of a champion and La Center battled back. A controversial technical foul on the Cougs for illegal substitution gave the Wildcats some extra free throws and extra possession and the Cougs ended the 3rd with a five point lead.

The fourth quarter was a knock down drag out quarter with neither team backing down. In the end La Center was able to take a one point lead with 38 seconds left. Seton took a timeout and Coach Kent drew up an offensive set. Looking at the foul trouble we were in, how good La Center is at shooting free throws Kent didn’t hesitate to hold the ball and go for the win at the buzzer. The Cougs milked the clock down to about 12 seconds and then called for a clear out for Isaiah Parker. La Center sent help defense as Parker attacked the paint. that left Matthew Kent alone in the corner and Isaiah hit Matt in rhythm. Matt had a clean look and let a three pointer fly that fell short. La Center secured the rebound and despite our efforts to foul being ignored by the refs the Wildcats were able to run out the clock. Final Score La Center 58 Seton 57.

Seton was led by Henry Demsky’s 22 points. Isaiah Parker scored 20 and Matthew Kent had 11. The Cougars will take on Stevenson Thursday at King’s Way for the 3rd place semi final and a chance to play for a state playoff birth on Saturday.

Thank you to all our fans who showed tonight. What an amazing high school game and an amazing high school basketball atmosphere.

Go Cougs!
