Hoquiam High School
Seton Catholic College Preparatory High School
The Seton Catholic Girls Soccer Team once continued their very tough non-conference schedule by hosting cross league power Hoquiam in a dual of District 4 1A teams. Going into the game Coach Chase knew Hoquiam would be a challenge as they’re always strong and Hoquiam lived up to their billing. Once again Seton would have to play with a limited roster as multiple players were suffering from injuries and or illness.
The match was very physical with both teams pushing the pace and physicality. Both teams had their chances to score in the first half with multiple shots missing just wide or hitting the crossbar. The first half ended in a 0-0 tie with neither team owning the momentum.
Shortly after the start of the second half a Hoquiam midfielder found herself with the ball at her feet and plenty of room near the top of the box. After a few touches she struck a beautiful shot from just outside the box that found the lower right corner of the goal for a 1-0 Hoquiam lead.
Seton responded with tenacious play and Coach Chase made an adjustment placing Defensive specialist Kiya Gere up front to generate some offense. It didn’t take long for the move to produce as Kiya made a brilliant run down the right side of the field, struck a beautiful cross across the face of the goal that found Katherine “Kat” Zdunich making a run to the far left post. “Kat” settled the ball with her left foot, then struck a perfect left foot shot to the upper right corner of the goal for a 1-1 tie!
Seton continued their pressure and had several chances to pull out the win but solid keeping by Hoquiam’s goalie helped keep the game a 1-1 tie at the final whistle.
Coach Chase said; ” We started slow but as the game went on we started to find our footing gain. Hoquiam never let up, but our players rose to the challenge and came back from behind. We have one more tough non league game to smooth out our game and get ready for the season.”
After the game “Kat” Zdunich had this to say about her first goal of the season: “Kiya played a perfect cross to me, I settled it with a good first touch and was able to strike it well for the goal.”
The Cougs will play their final non league match on Sept. 21st. hosting another crossover game vs the always touch Montesano Bulldogs of the Evergreen District.
