The young but feisty Seton Catholic Girls Soccer Team finally got a chance to play on their own turf after playing five road games to start the season! The Cougs took full advantage of the opportunity and came away with a 2-1 victory over a very athletic Westside Christian team.

Coach Chase made some adjustments in player assignments the last game against Fort Vancouver and it showed some promise. Chase stayed with those adjustments and it payed off! 10 minutes into the game Senior Midfielder Katherine Zdunich played a ball from the left third of the field to a sprinting Senior Riley McDonough who played a brilliant touch to beat the defenders and then calmly took the goalie one v one and played the ball in the lower left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead for Seton!

It wasn’t more than two minutes later where again McDonough fired a shot on goal. This time the Westside Christian goalie was able to block it but not control it. This led to a scramble in front of the goal and McDonough was there to finish it off into the back of the net and a 2-0 lead Cougs that they carried into the half.

As expected in the second half the Eagles came out swinging and began to press forward controlling most of the play in their offensive half of the field. One of the adjustments Coach Chase had made was moving Maddi Manary to play center back on defense. It’s a position she’d never played before but it turned out to be brilliant as she has been an anchor in the back field. The cougs stingy defense and the great hands of Michaela Ephraim kept the Eagles Scoreless until about the 70th minute when their star midfielder found free space to run and finish off a goal to bring the score to 2-1.

The last 10 minutes were a battle as Westside continued to pressure. With just a few minutes left their midfielder once again came loose at the top of the box and fired a rocket on goal that was sure to tie the game up at twos. But somehow Ephraim, in her first year ever at goalie, made a text book save tipping the ball over the top of the goal and preserving the 2-1 lead. The Cougs managed to pick their physicality up again in the last few minutes and as a result celebrated the 2-1 victory! First win of the season and home opening win!

The Cougs will open league play this coming Tuesday with another home game against Tri Co League opponent LaCenter at 5pm!

Congrats on the win girls! We are proud of you!

Go Cougs!
