In what was one of the most exciting volleyball matches that’s ever been played by a Seton Catholic team the varsity girls lost a “nail biter” to 3A Hudsons Bay. It was the season opener for both teams, and Seton being the underdog was playing against a much bigger 3A school.Yet the Cougars showed no signs of being intimidated by playing a much larger school with what may be the most athletic team we’ll face all year. The Seton football team was on hand to provide a spirited atmosphere as the football players and Bay fans battled each other in back and forth cheers!

The Cougs dropped the first set 25-19 but felt like they gave that set away with several unforced errors. They came back strong in the 2nd set and took it at the end 25-22 making it one set each going into the third. The Cougs kept fighting through several game stoppages and battled through a 3rd set that saw several momentum swings. Seton took the third 25-23 and looked to close it out in 4! The Fourth set did not go well at first for Seton and it looked as though we were for sure going to a fifth when Anna Yrjanson went on a six unanswered point serving run that tied it all up at 23 each. Bay took the next two points to even up the match 2-2 going into the 5th and final set.

In the 5th set Bay went on a run and had game point at 14-12 when Seton battled back for a 14-14 tie and a chance to serve out the match. Bay recovered and were able to win the next two points and clinch the match in a 3-2 set thriller.

Anna Yrjanson let Seton with 16 kills, 6 aces, and 8 digs.
Anna Vu had 6 aces, 16 kills, and 8 digs.
Haley Vick was fearless all night with 20 digs from rockets launched by the very athletic Bay squad.

Coach Adams was very proud of how the girls competed tonight. There is a difference in this team’s energy this year and it showed and how they never once stopped competing. These girls showed they belonged on the court with a very tall and athletic Hudson Bay team.

Seton will once again take on a much bigger opponent and bigger school when we place host to Evergreen on Thursday Sept. 13th. JV 5:30pm/Varsity 7pm. Troy Owen will be on the grill BBQ’n burgers and dogs so bring the family!

Go Cougs!
